Expert Focuses on Stem Cell Therapies to Treat Heart Disease
WAUKESHA – Speaking at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Wednesday, March 31, Professor Gary E. Lyons will discuss his research and its promise for treating heart disease through the use of stem cells. The Visions & Expressions presentation, “Cardiac Stem Cells: Cell Therapy Approaches to Treating Heart Disease,” is set for noon in the Commons, Room 101, located on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
Sponsored by the Lectures & Fine Arts Committee, the program is open to the public at no charge, and there is free parking in university lots during the event.
Lyons, who has been teaching in the anatomy department of the UW-Madison School of Medicine since 1991, is a member of the UW-Madison Teaching Academy and conducts research on heart development and ways to treat heart disease. His laboratory is funded by the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association, and he has written or co-authored more than 100 scientific publications.
A graduate of Yale University, Lyons earned a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and did post-doctoral work at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Cal., and the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France.
