Public Invited to Attend Free Thanksgiving Dinner at Christ the King Church of Delafield

Nov. 13, 2012

Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1600 S. Genesee St., Delafield, will host a free Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday, November 21, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the congregation’s Great Hall. The event is being sponsored by St. John’s Chrysostom Episcopal Church, Delafield Presbyterian Church, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Christ the King Lutheran, Nashotah House Theological Seminary, and St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy.

Dinner will feature traditional Thanksgiving fare, including turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, assorted fruit and vegetables. The meal is being prepared and served by volunteers from Christ the King Lutheran Church and the larger community. Monetary donations will be accepted to cover costs of the meal.

The feast is just one of the evening’s events. Throughout the meal, participants will be entertained by an organ grinder, accordion player, pianist and other special music

Following the dinner, an ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church, 120 Nashotah Rd, Nashotah, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The musical service will feature the MPS Alumni & Homeless Gospel Choir. This unique Gospel choir of more than 30 members combines the voices of former MPS teachers and alumni, as well as homeless individuals from the Milwaukee area. They have become a popular and welcomed addition to many worship services in the area. The choir is directed by former North Division high school teacher and Delafield resident Arlene Skwierawski and one of her former students, K.C. Williams. A PieFest and refreshments will follow in the church’s community room.

“Last year we served nearly 400 people at our free Thanksgiving dinner. We hope to reach even more people this year, especially those who need the nourishment from a turkey dinner with all the trimmings,” said Pastor Gary Grindeland, pastor of Christ the King Lutheran. “It is also a time for people to be nourished and fed with fellowship and community. This is a season of unity and a time for people to give thanks and celebrate our many blessings. Sometimes knowing that we are not alone is an even more powerful nourishment than food. At Christ the King the community can have it both ways.”

An ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) church, Christ the King has nearly 1,000 parishioners and welcomes new members. Weekly worship is held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 8:15 and 10 a.m.
