“Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium,” a community forum, takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha.
The event, which will be offered in Northview 133, is free and open to the public. UW-Waukesha is located at 1500 N. University Drive in Waukesha.
“Journey” is based on an award-winning documentary that examines events that devastate our families, companies, schools and neighborhoods. Through discussion and interactive activities, the presentation seeks to inform participants about the high cost of intolerance and inspire them to be the catalyst for change. It is sponsored by the Association for The Rights of Citizens with Handicaps and hosted by the Campus Climate Committee.
“The Journey to a Hate Free Millennium program offers the UW-Waukesha campus an opportunity to form a true grassroots movement within the UW System that will become an example to other campuses with a statement that we will not perpetuate hateful and discriminating language or climate,” said student Lorra Ross, co-president of the LGBTQS Pride Alliance and a member of the Campus Climate Committee.
Ken Stuettgen, Student Government Association president and a member of the Campus Climate Committee, said the forum is significant for the UW-Waukesha campus.
“It’s always important to recognize any hate or differences and be able to unite against it,” he said.
“Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium” stirred many students who came to the presentation last year, said Tim Thering, an associate professor history and faculty member of the Campus Climate Committee.
“Last year, I offered my students extra credit if they attended the presentation and wrote a short response paper. I usually find that students go through the motions when writing their responses, but this time it was clear that many of the students were truly moved by the presentation. Many were reflective about their own beliefs and actions. Some revealed how they had been targeted by others. All seemed inspired to do something.”
