More college signings announced

Feb. 20, 2012 | 0 comments

Several more local student-athletes have recently announced which colleges they will attend.

Amanda Kalupa, a standout pitcher for Brookfield East, has committed to Washington University in St. Louis. Kalupa, who has been a Greater Metro all-conference selection the last three years, will join coach Leticia Pineda-Boutte's team that went 31-10 last year and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the ninth straight year.

Defensive linemen Ryan "Rocky" Johnson of Brookfield Central and Joey Torch of Brookfield East will attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Johnson, a 5-foot-10-inch, 230-pounder, was a first-team NOW Newspapers selection, a first team All-Conference and honorable mention All-State selection.

"Rocky was the heart and soul of our defense," Central coach Jamie Meulemans said. "He had a combination of tremendous strength and speed."

Torch, a 6-4, 265-pounder, was a second team All-Conference player in the Greater Metro and an honorable mention NOW Newspapers selection.

"Joey is a tough, rugged player whose best football is ahead of him," Brookfield East coach Tom Swittel said. "Joey is excited to be joining the National Champion Warhawks."

Marta Wangard, a Brookfield East graduate, signed on to play soccer at UW-Madison.

Wangard played soccer for IMG Academy in Bradenton last year. She previously played year-round for FC Milwaukee and played varsity for East her freshman year.

She was a member of the Region 2 ODP team representing Wisconsin and was invited to multiple USSF ID camps before tearing her ACL in May while playing in the Florida State Cup.

She attended Brookfield East this past semester while rehabbing and graduated this January.

The Elm Grove Soccer Club announced 12 college signings, nine men and three women. Two of the players - Stuart McBain and Taylor Swittel, both to UW-Milwaukee - had previously been announced by the schools.

The student-athletes and their colleges are as follows.

The men's signings were Jack Balistreri (UW-Oshkosh), Nico Bartolomeo (Catholic), Nick Biasiotta (Duquesne), Jimmy Grunert (Drake), Danny Lemus (UW-Milwaukee), Justin Loncaric (UW-Whitewater), Joe Naughton (UW-Madison) and Mac Wheeler (Marquette University).

The women's signings were Cassie Blaise (Belmont University) and Abbey Hoerchner (UWM).
