Lancers rally to beat Milwaukee South

Improve overall record to 6-2

Dec. 27, 2011 | 0 comments

Brookfield Central put together a big fourth period and rallied to beat Milwaukee South, 55-51, Friday at South.

The nonconference win improved the Lancers' overall record to 6-2, as they prepare to play Nicolet on the first night of the Luke Homan Memorial Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

South jumped to a 13-7 lead after one period and increased the lead to 28-19 by halftime.

"For some reason we came out flat," Central coach Mark Adams said. "We were flat in warm-ups, and we came out and played like it."

The Lancers finally came out in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals, 13-10, to cut the lead to 38-32 going into the fourth period.

Central exploded for 23 points in the fourth quarter and outscored South by 10 points to earn the hard-fought victory.

"For whatever reason, we started to spend more energy on defense," Adams said. "We cut it to six from 14, and then when Seth Mortag hit two free throws with 1 minute, 26 seconds left to play, we got our first lead."

Only five Lancers got on the scoreboard, but the scoring was lopsided as senior Seth Mortag scored 24 points and sophomore Riley LaChance added 18.

The Lancers were 22-of-35 from the free-throw line, with Mortag (10-of-15) and LaChance (7-of-8) combining for 17-of-23 of them.

The Lancers were 16-for-19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, though, with four players - Nick Olson, Jack Sandstrom, Mortag and LaChance - converting twice each in the final minutes.

Sandstrom finished with eight points, Olson with four and Elijah Goodman with one.
