Lancers drop 'dual,' tourney to East

Central sends four to state tournament

May 29, 2012

The meet was officially called a WIAA Division 1 tennis sectional, but it actually became an impromptu dual meet between Brookfield East and Brookfield Central.

The East boys won the showdown five matches to one, and thus walked away with the sectional crown, scoring 54 points to Central's 43, May 23 in Brookfield.

"Brookfield East was just a little bit stronger than we were," Central head coach Dave Steinbach said. "There were some close matches, some hard-fought finals. We had them sweating."

The lone Central victory against East was posted by Matt Michael at third singles with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Tyler Kendler in the championship match. Michael finished the season at 21-7.

At second singles, Jordan Patt lost to Tim Corwin, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), in the title match. Patt, who is now 19-8 on the season, earned a special qualifier to this weekend's state individual tournament and will take on Will Kammerait of Homestead (24-4), another special qualifier, at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 31.

Peter Lyon dropped another close final at fourth singles to Michael Amato, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and completes his season at 19-7.

First singles player Michael Treis fell to Felix Corwin, 6-3, 6-4, but the second-place finish gave him a spot in the state individual tourney.

Treis (21-7) is seeded eighth in singles and will open at 8:30 a.m. Friday against either Jake Diesler of Mukwonago (20-2) or Wentong Zhang of Whitefish Bay (15-8), who play in the first round.

The first doubles unit of Andrew Denu and Tarun Jella lost to Ben Klein and Ben Stewart, 6-4, 6-2, but will also play at state. The duo (17-10) will meet Ryan Miller and Ken States of Kenosha Tremper (16-8) at 5 p.m. May 31.

At third doubles, Hasan Nadeem and Tommy Hastings fell to Billy Dietz and Michael Wolf, 6-1, 6-2, and finished at 11-8.

The only flight that did not feature a Central-East final was second doubles, where Jack Peterson and Charlie Reamer finished third. Peterson and Reamer completed their season at 15-8.
