Girls Hockey: Glacier beats Xavier, USM to advance to sectional finals

Feb. 21, 2012 | 0 comments

The second-seeded Kettle Moraine co-op hung on to beat seventh-seed Fox Cities Xavier, 5-4, Feb. 16 at The Ponds of Brookfield and moved on to the second round of the WIAA playoffs Tuesday, where they edged third-seeded University School of Milwaukee, 3-2, at The Ponds of Brookfield.

The Glacier has won three of four games and nine of their last 12 games.

USM (16-8-2) had advanced by defeating sixth-seeded Appleton West, 3-2, Friday.

In the regional win over Fox Cities (9-15-1), the Glacier led 3-0 after one period, 4-1 after two and then saw the Stars outscore them, 3-1, in the final period - but they hung on for the 5-4 victory.

The Glacier got a goal and an assist from Morgan Holowell and Alex Aghjian of Brookfield Central and Jamie Ertl of Menomonee Falls, and goals from Trinity Robinson of Brookfield Central and Jeralyse Tylke of Kettle Moraine.

Jessica Foley of Brookfield Central had two assists; Becca Gecks of Waukesha West and Irene Hougard of Kettle Moraine each added an assist. Brookfield Central's Jenna Bales saved 15 of 19 shots on goal.

With the win over the Wildcats on Tuesday, the Glacier advance to the sectional finals Friday at 7 p.m. against the top-seeded Green Bay East co-op at the Mullet Ice Center in Hartland.

If the Glacier wins that game, they would move on to the WIAA State Girls Hockey Tournament on March 2 for a 2:15 p.m. game at the Alliant Energy Center.
