It was not for a lack of effort that the Brookfield East girls basketball team dropped a 42-26 decision to Waukesha North on Dec. 22 at East.
"Waukesha North had two tall post players which we struggled to contain," East coach Kelly Lam said. "We did our best to battle them, which I give my girls credit for continually battling throughout the game, but they were just too much for us.
"In the beginning of the game, we were not producing much offense, which put us in a hole."
North jumped to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter as 6-foot post freshman Jessica Kelliher scored eight of her game-high 20 points. Jessica added six points and 6-1 sophomore Elizabeth Kelliher scored six of her seven points in the second period as the Northstars took a 25-8 lead into halftime.
"After halftime, we came out with some spark and cut the lead to eight, but couldn't get any closer than that," Lam said.
East outscored North, 11-5, to cut the lead to 31-19 going into the fourth quarter.
" Kirsten Kreh and Alyssa Carter kept battling the 6-footers at the high post and didn't stop working," Lam said. " Lauren Kennedy also stepped up her game and became a more physical presence. I applaud the girls' effort throughout the game."
Christy Johnson had 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Emily Utic had 10.
