East wins two duals at Northern Exposure

Finish second in bracket, take 18th overall in tourney

Dec. 30, 2011 | 0 comments

The Brookfield East Spartans took part in the Northern Exposure Wrestling Dual Tournament from Dec. 28 to 29 and this year they did not have to stay up in Merrill snowed in by a blizzard like last season.

The Spartans finished second in the fifth bracket, going 2-5 which put them in 18th place overall in the 24-team, two-day tournament.

East lost to New London (44-30) in the Bracket 5 finals.

The Spartans were led by senior Casey Dentino at 132 pounds with a perfect 7-0 record, living up to his No. 8 ranking in Division 1.

East's other two senior wrestlers - Andrew Sobczak and Sam Brunker - also had excellent records, each finishing with six wins and a loss.

Sobczak at 285 led the team with five pins, dominating his opponents in a break-out performance for his wrestling career.

Brunker at 182 showed off his takedown and pin style, resulting in four more pins throughout the two-day tournament.

East also had some other impressive performances.

Junior John LeClaire at 195 won four matches and lost three, while the freshman class was led by Josh Dempsey at 126 winning six matches and losing one and finishing with an impressive four pins. Freshman (113) Carsten Balke at 113 also had a solid tournament, going 3-3.

The Spartans wrestle their next Greater Metro Conference match at West Allis Hale at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5.
