Central teams both whip West Allis Hale

East squads lose to Menomonee Falls

Jan. 24, 2012 | 0 comments

Tuesday was a good night for the Brookfield Central boys and girls basketball teams, while the Brookfield East boys and girls teams suffered two losses.

The opponents might have had something to do with it.

The Lancers (13-2) got some good news as they whipped West Allis Hale, 90-49, at home to improve to 8-0 on top of Greater Metro Conference. The last-place Huskies fell to 0-8 and 3-11 overall.

Meanwhile West Allis Central (6-2, 10-4) was defeating a visiting Wauwatosa East team (6-2, 10-2), 60-56, to knock the Red Raiders two games behind the Lancers in the race for the GMC Championship.

The Lady Lancers (4-3, 7-6) meanwhile traveled to West Allis and clobbered Hale (1-6, 2-11), 67-31.

As far as Brookfield East went, it was a lost night. The girls (0-7, 3-12) got clobbered by co-leader Menomonee Falls (6-1, 13-2), 50-20, and the boys (4-4, 7-8) dropped their second straight game, losing in overtime to the Indians (4-5, 77) at home, 57-53.

Central girls

The Lady Lancers scored 67 points, just missing their season high (68), set Jan. 10. They set the tone of the night with a 20-2 first quarter and then rolled to the victory. They led 37-14 at half and 54-20 after three periods.

Sophomore guard Lydia Rohde led the way with 20 points, which included six 3-pointers, while senior forward Anna Liewen added 13.

Central boys

In the win over the Huskies, senior forward Seth Mortag and sophomore point guard Riley LaChance each scored 17 points and senior forward Matt Lauritzen had 12 points. Fourteen players got on the board, including 6-foot-4 senior forward Isaiah Syndor, who scored two points, after returning from a broken hand suffered in the final football game.

Central led 25-8, putting the game away in the first quarter, and 45-22 at half and 74-38 after three periods. The 90 points the Lancers scored was a season high, surpassing the 76 points scored against Nicolet on Dec. 29.

East boys

The Spartans had the toughest night of anyone, losing in overtime to an unimpressive Falls team. The Spartans trailed 9-7 after one quarter and 25-24 at intermission. They trailed 43-42 after three quarters and needed an 8-7 advantage in the fourth period to send the game into overtime.

JP Tokoto, the North Carolina recruit, scored 20 points to lead the Indians, including five of his team's seven overtime points. East could only manage a basket by Nick Kanavas and a free throw by Ryan McBride in the extra period.

Mikey Novak, a 6-5 junior forward, had a career game, scoring 23 points, including 15 of his team's 17 points in the second quarter. Junior guard Brian Smith scored eight of his 13 points in the third quarter, and McBride finished with 12 points.

The loss moved the Spartans down to fourth place behind the Indians.

East girls

The Lady Spartans remained in last place, still looking for their first conference win. After playing the Indians even in the first quarter (8-8), Falls went on a 23-9 tear in the second period for a 31-17 lead at halftime. Unfortunately, the Lady Spartans' offense then took the rest of the night off, as they only managed to score two points in the third period and one in the fourth. Thus it didn't matter that they held Falls to 19 second-half points.

Freshman Kellie Goodman had eight points while sophomore Christy Johnson had six. Mykayla Robertson led the Indians with 13 points.

The Lady Spartans have now dropped two in a row and 10 of their last 11 games.
