Central girls nip Whitefish Bay to win Benson

The Brookfield Central girls scored 102.50 points to Whitefish Bay's 101.33 to win the eight-team Dan Benson Invitational on Friday at Wauwatosa West.

The Lancers once again did it with depth, winning only two events, but still taking the championship.

"The team had some impressive performances especially given the cold windy evening," Central coach Lorie Lewis said. "Despite the less than ideal track weather the team hung in there until the 1,600 relay to edge out Whitefish Bay for the victory. The team truly had significant efforts across the board in all the events."

The Lancers had six third-place performances, including the 1,600 relay of Molly Schlinder, Lauren Gehl, Elizabeth Flatley and Danielle Kulpins (4 minutes, 23.56 seconds) which put them over the top.

Veronica Porubsky won the 100-meter hurdles (17.47 seconds) and took third in the 300 hurdles (50.80), while Flatley won the 800 (2:19.21).

"Elizabeth Flatley led the way with her first-place finish in the 800, which put her in the top five on the honor roll," Lewis said. "She finished off the night with a sensational race in the 1,600 relay in which she took three places in the final leg.

"First year senior Lauren Gehl ran a very strong lead off leg for the 1,600 relay. This was her first 400 of the season which put her into one of the top 400 runners on the team."

Alissa Elwing was second in the 400 (1:02.85) and fourth in the 200 (26.84) and Bryn Adams was second in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).

Debbie Entzminger finished second in the shot put (35-4) and fourth in the discus throw (93-5).

Individual third-place finishers were Paulina Agnello, 1,600 (5:27.53); Milena Latinovich, pole vault (8-6); Kelsey Kazmierczak, pole vault (8-6); and Jessica Meichtry, discus (95-1½) and shot put (34-0).

Danielle Kilpins was fourth in the 800 (2:32.52) and Megan Hlava, 800 (2:33.46), Sheila Kilb, 1,600 (5:39.81) and Shaelyn Zigler, high jump (4-6), were all in fifth.

The 800 relay of Jessica Marciniak, Jennifer Fox, Zigler and Serenity Tuchalski finished sixth (1:55.57) and the 400 relay of Nicole Cyra, Ceci Risch, Zigler and Latinovich were seventh (56.80).

Jennifer Fox in the 200 (28.08) and Megan Gashchke in the 3,200 (12:54.09) also finished seventh and Kelsey Fox in the 400 (1:07.30) and Jessica Bourdow in the triple jump (28-10¾) finished eighth.

Lewis had praise for Porubsky, Entzminger and Meichtry.

"Veronica Porubsky continues to have a strong season in the 100 hurdles as she placed first in that race," she said. "Our top two shot putters, Debbie Entzminger and Jessica Meichtry, had very competitive throws to hold onto second and third places respectively."
