Brookfield gymnasts finish seventh in conference meet

The Brookfield Central/East co-op girls gymnastics team lost their last dual meet of the season, but they finished seventh of nine teams at the North Shore/Greater Metro Conference meet Saturday with their highest score of the season.

Menomonee Falls/Germantown defeated Brookfield, 135.35-114.25, Feb. 13 at Falls in the final dual meet of the season.

As usual, Kelsey Linsmeier led Brookfield, taking second on floor (9.0) and beam (8.375) and third on all-around (33.125). Katie Krugel finished third on beam (8.275).

The Indians/Warhawks also defeated the Brookfield JV, 108.75-93.4.

Elena Fayle won floor (7.4), Allie Bullen tied for second on vault (7.8) and Ashley Schwaegler tied for second on vault (7.8), finished third on beam (5.6) and won the all-around (23.3).

"Menomonee Falls/Germantown is a talented team, so it was good competition for the girls," Brookfield coach Erin Kokta said. "It was great to see the girls stick some routines on beam as we have been working hard in practice on minimizing our falls, and that definitely showed tonight.

"I was proud of the girls as we posted our highest varsity team score of the season," she continued. "Our weakest event is bars so we are going to spend these next few days really trying to perfect our bar routines to try and bump that team score even higher."

Brookfield then finished seventh out of nine teams at the North Shore Conference/Greater Metro Conference meet at Homestead, scoring 118.425 points.

Brookfield beat out Port Washington (115.350) and Shorewood (103.675), as Homestead (141.275) edged Grafton/Cedarburg (139.150) for the conference title.

Linsmeier had her best meet of the season, posting season bests on floor (seventh, 9.075), beam (ninth, 8.825), vault and in the all-around (11th, 33.50).

Several girls had season bests, including Tori Rieves on vault and bars, Hope Peterson on beam and floor, Krugel on vault and bars and Bullen on bars.

"I'm so happy with how the girls performed," Kokta said. "We definitely accomplished our goals that we had set as a team. The girls were so team-motivated and supportive of each other all week and it showed as we posted our highest team score of the season by almost five whole points."

The JV also finished seventh with 91.625 points.

"We had five top 15 finishes among many PRs," Kokta said. "I could not be more pleased with how these young girls finished up their season. They have come so far from the beginning of the year and I'm so proud of what they have accomplished."

Fayle was 11th in the all-around, eighth on beam and 13th on the vault; Bullen ninth on vault and Schwaegler 13th on beam.
