It was a Tuesday nightmare for the Brookfield Central and Brookfield East girls and boys teams, as no one came away with a victory in Greater Metro Conference action.
Central boys lose at Marquette
The Lancers (8-2, 13-4) lost at Marquette, 63-55, as the Hilltoppers jumped off to a quick start with a 19-10 first-quarter run and then extended their halftime advantage to 12 points at 33-21.
The Lancers played better in the second half, but they couldn't overcome their big first-half deficit. After an even third quarter (14-14), Central could only manage to outscore the Hilltoppers by four points in the final quarter (20-16).
The loss enabled West Allis Central (8-2, 12-4) to move into a first-place tie and the Bulldogs come to Central on Feb. 3.
Nick Klar, a 6-foot-4-inch sophomore forward who was only averaging 8.4 points a game, killed the Lancers with a 20-point performance. Marquette's season-leading scorer, A.J. Mueller, added 10 points.
On the Lancers' side, Seth Mortag led the way with 12 points and Nate Rohde had one of his better games with 11, while Riley LaChance and Jack Sandstrom each managed eight points.
The Hilltoppers (5-10 overall) won three conference games in a row to improve to 4-6 with wins over Sussex Hamilton (4-6, 8-9), West Allis Hale (0-10, 3-13) and the Lancers.
DSHA pounds Central girls
Divine Savior Holy Angels showed the Lancers why they are the best team in the Greater Metro Conference by walking over Central, 54-36, on Tuesday at Central.
"They outplayed us in every facet of the game," Central coach Dan Wandrey said matter-of-factly afterward. "We got our butts whipped."
The Dashers (11-3 overall) are 8-1 in conference play, one game ahead of Sussex Hamilton (7-2, 11-2) and Menomonee Falls (7-2, 14-3), while the fourth-place Lancers (8-7) fell to 5-4 in league play and pretty much saw any chance of defending their fourth title in a row go out the window.
DSHA took a 10-4 lead after one quarter and 23-14 at halftime. Shaylan Reardon and Arike Ogunbowale then combined for 13 of the Dashers' 15 points in the third period to roll into the final quarter with a 38-23 lead.
Ogunbowale added seven points in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 19, while Central's Anna Liewen had 14 points, eight in the second half. Sarah Fotsch managed eight points.
East boys drop fourth straight
The Brookfield East boys have now dropped four straight conference games and five of their last six games to fall to 4-6, tied for sixth place with Sussex Hamilton, and 7-10 overall.
The Spartans dropped a 56-42 decision at home on Tuesday, as the Chargers blew the game up in the second and third quarters with a 33-16 advantage after a low-scoring 10-10 first period.
Brady Ellingson, a 6-4 sophomore wing, led the way with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. East guard Brian Smith led the way with a career-high 16 points, while Ryan McBride had 10 points and Mikey Novak added eight.
East girls defeated handily
The Spartans were taken apart by second-place Sussex Hamilton, losing on the road by 53 points, 66-13. The East offense managed three points in the first, second and fourth periods and managed a game-high four points in the third quarter.
The Chargers rolled over East leading 31-6 at halftime. They then came out in the second half and went on a 23-4 run in the third quarter to take a 54-10 lead into the final period.
Kellie Goodman had nine points, while 11 Hamilton players scored, topped off by Mackenzie Latt with 19 points.
