Boys Swim: Barracudas have promising week

Jan. 9, 2012 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Barracudas swim team took third in the Classic 8/Greater Metro Conference Relays at Brookfield East on Jan. 5 and finished fourth out of 19 teams at the 18th Annual Marquette Invitational at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Arrowhead took first with 133 points and Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial was second (104), ahead of Brookfield (94).

The Barracudas had four second-place and one third-place finish as their best placements.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of junior Joe Bauer, sophomore Brian Borden, junior Mitch Douglas and senior Erik Wahlgren came in second in 1 minute, 30.57 seconds; the 400 individual medley of sophomore Michael Flatley, Wahlgren, sophomore Tyler Patt and Borden finished second (3:52.88).

The 300 breaststroke relay of Wahlgren, Patt, freshman Daniel Lee and Borden (3:09.19) and the 500 free relay of Douglas, Bauer, sophomore Dean Zheng and Flatley also finished second (4:36.27).

The 300 backstroke relay of Bauer, Wahlgren, junior Mark Horvatin and Borden came in third (2:47.24).

Arrowhead won the Marquette Invitational with 409 points, ahead of Chicago Fenwick (286), Madison West (275) and the Barracudas (171).

"This meet is almost as fast as our state meet," Barracudas coach William Twitchell said. "Though our finish does not translate to a top-10 finish at state, it is a strong motivator for continued growth."

William Sass had the Barracudas' only first, winning 1-meter diving with 397.70 points.

Wahlgren was second in the 100 free (47.82) and fourth in the 50 free (21.86), and Borden was second in the 100 breast (1:01.17) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:00.70).

Brookfield was fourth in the 200 free (1:29.27) behind Borden, Douglas, Bauer and Wahlgren and fifth in the 400 free (3:22.28) behind Flatley, Zheng, Borden and Wahlgren.

Bauer, Patt, Zheng and Douglas were ninth in the 200 medley relay (1:46.93).
