Boys hockey: Stars continue to struggle

Dec. 19, 2011 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Stars dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision Friday to Saint Mary's Springs (5-1), their fourth loss in the last five outings.

The Stars are only 0-1 in Classic 8 league play, but they are 3-5 overall.

The Stars fell behind 2-0 against the Ledgers at The Ponds of Brookfield, as SMS scored at the 8 minute, 44 second mark of the first period.

Then the Ledgers scored again at 8:44 of the second period to take a 2-0 lead.

Junior forward Mason Kollakowsky scored the Stars' only goal at 11:13 of the second period, with an assist by junior forward Carter Jenkins.

But SMS goalkeeper Andrew Riehl blanked the Stars the rest of the way as he finished with 17 saves.

The Ledgers final goal came at 9:54 of the third period to clinch the win.

Stars sophomore goalkeeper JJ Murnane turned away 34 shots.

Stars coach Chris Frantz praised Brandt Rogers and the team for playing short-handed.

" Brandt Rogers had one of his best games," he said. "With all the injures we took into this game, he really stepped up with his energy and heart to keep the team motivated.

"Again everyone played their hardest with us only running two lines."

Frantz was pleased that the Stars only had two penalties.

"It was a good game for the most part," he said. "We did get out of position a few times that did get us in trouble and at that time is when FDL took advantage of us."
