Baseball: Spartans off to winning start on diamond

Brookfield East went 5-0 last week and improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Greater Metro Conference.

East opened the week by winning a 9-8 decision at West Allis Hale on May 29, as Drew Kehoe, Ryan Rouse (an RBI) and Brandt Rogers had two hits each and Mike Eberle drove in three runs. Griffin Lynch earned the win, working five innings, and Pat O'Brien earned the save by pitching the final two frames.

East led the whole game at West Allis Central the next day, whipping the Bulldogs, 9-5, as O'Brien singled twice, tripled and drove in a run, Sam Brunker singled twice and drove in two runs and Rogers banged out two hits.

Tommy Tushaus (3 IP), Rouse (2 IP, 4 K) and Tyler Styer (2 IP) held Central to six hits.

Lynch then tossed a six-hitter and fanned eight as the Spartans beat Franklin, 2-0, on Friday at home. Kehoe had two singles and an RBI as East managed only four hits in the victory.

The Spartans then swept a doubleheader on Saturday, beating Wauwatosa East, 10-3, at Breitlow Field and Sussex Hamilton, 12-4, at Brookfield East, banging out 20 hits total in the two games.

Rouse (5 IP) got the win and Andy Wiesen (2 IP) finished up against the Red Raiders, while Kehoe and O'Brien each drove in two runs. Later that day, East whipped the Chargers, as Tushaus (4 IP) and O'Brien (3 IP) combined for the win, while Rouse singled and doubled and drove in two runs. Brunker had three hits and an RBI and Lynch had two hits and an RBI.

A look back: The Spartans won two of three games to start the year, beating Whitnall, 1-0, on May 23 at home and Greenfield, 3-1, on May 24 at home. They then dropped a 4-2 decision at Menomonee Falls on May 25 in their Greater Metro Conference opener.

Tushaus (3 IP), Lynch (2 IP), O'Brien (2 IP) and Dennis Mistrioty (1 IP) stopped the Falcons on seven hits to win the opener, as Styer drove in the game's only run.

Styer (4 IP) and Mistrioty (3 IP) stopped Greenfield on seven hits as Rogers had three hits and Jack Snow had two hits and an RBI for the Spartans, who banged out 11 hits.

In the loss to Falls, the score was tied at 2-2 when the Indians scored twice in the fifth for the victory. Rouse (4 IP) and Tushaus (2 IP) held Falls to seven hits, but East only managed four - two each by O'Brien and Rogers.
