Brookfield Central started and ended the week well, opening with a win and then splitting two games on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament, but it was a three-game losing streak in between that put a damper on the week.
The Lancers opened with a 6-0 win over West Allis Central on June 11 and closed by defeating West Allis Hale, 6-5, on Friday and Arrowhead, 14-8 on Saturday. They also lost a thrilling 7-6 decision to Homestead in the second game.
In between they were outscored 32-2 in losses at Oak Creek (13-0) on June 12; at Marquette (3-0) on June 13 and to Sussex Hamilton (16-2) at McCoy Field on June 14.
The Lancers are 4-12 overall going into this week with a 3-9 record in the Greater Metro Conference.
On Saturday, the Lancers defeated Arrowhead, 14-8, in the first game of the UW-Whitewater Tournament. Trailing 6-3 after two innings, the Lancers scored five in the third, one in the fourth and five in the fifth to put the game away.
Senior Brett Puffer singled twice, doubled and scored three times and pitched a complete game win, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs to key the win. Sophomore Luke Sommerfeld had a big game at the plate as well. He had a single, two runs scored, a triple and a bases-clearing double in the third, finishing with four RBIs.
Sophomore Riley Richarz also added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, with Elijah Goodman and Charlie O'Dwyer each chipping in two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Central lost a crushing 7-6 decision to Homestead in the second game of the tournament. Central took a 6-4 lead with three runs in the seventh, only to see the Highlanders score twice to tie it and send it into extra innings and then win it in the eighth.
Richarz singled twice and Conor Shipman singled and doubled and drove in a run, as the Lancers managed 11 hits.
On Friday at home, the Lancers trailed West Allis Hale, 5-1, going into the bottom of the seventh, but scored four runs to tie the game and then won it in the eighth inning.
Puffer started the seventh inning with a walk, O'Dwyer singled and Eric Ranchau walked, loading the bases with nobody out. After a fly out, Matt Ausloos drew an RBI walk to cut the lead to 5-2 and Richarz then followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3.
After a pop-out for the second out, Shipman delivered a clutch two-out, two-run RBI single to tie the game at 5-5 and send it into extra frames.
O'Dwyer then led off the eighth with a base hit and was sacrificed to second by Ranchau. Hale then hit three straight batters - Peter Schuelke, Ausloos and Richarz - to force in the winning run.
Senior Matt Haralson notched his third victory for the Lancers, going all eight innings on the hill, striking out three and scattering eight hits to get the complete game victory.
