Barracudas win Bob White Invitational
Following impressive win over Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial
The Brookfield Barracudas ended an excellent week by winning the prestigious Bob White Invitational on Saturday at Wauwatosa West following a dual meet win over Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial two days before.
The Barracudas scored 435.5 points to beat out the New Berlin Marlins by 106.5 points for the crown.
"There are fewer than six teams in the entire state that can beat us when we have 36 events," Brookfield coach William Twitchell said. "Fortunately for us those teams must have been busy on Saturday."
There were plenty of highlights for the Barracudas on Saturday.
Senior William Sass took first in the 1-meter diving with 422.85 and finished the regular season undefeated.
Senior Erik Wahlgren took first in all four events he took part in, including two relays. He won the 50-yard freestyle (22.64) and the 100 free (48.83) and then was part of the winning 200 free relay with Mitch Douglas, Dean Zheng and Joe Bauer (1:33.09) and the 400 free relay with Brian Borden, Michael Flatley and Bauer (3:25.80).
Several Barracudas had an excellent day.
Borden was also second in the 200 individual medley (2:03.57) and fourth in the 500 free (5:18.75) and took third along with Tyler Patt, Zheng and Douglas in the 200 medley relay (1:46.60).
Douglas was also second in 50 free (23.12) while Flatley was also second in the 500 free (5:09.38) and fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.59).
Bauer was third in 50 free (23.49) and fifth in the 100 free (52.78), while Patt took third in 100 breaststroke (1:07.30) and Zheng was fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.55).
The Barracudas opened the week with a 91-85 win over Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial on Jan. 26 at home.
Brookfield had five first-place finishes and seven second-place performances.
Sass set a pool record in diving with 285.67 points to highlight the meet.
Also taking firsts were the 200 medley of Borden, Patt, Zheng and Wahlgren (1:43.10); the 200 freestyle relay of Douglas, Borden, Bauer and Wahlgren (1:32.25); and double-winner Borden in the 200 individual medley (2:00.88); and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.66).
Runner-up performances went to Flatley in the 200 free (1:56.43) and 500 free (5:13.47); Wahlgren in the 50 free (22.27) and 100 free (48.75); Zheng in the 100 butterfly (59.57); Patt in the 200 IM (2:14.05); and the 400 free relay of Tommy Wester, Zheng, Bauer and Flatley (3:38.78).
"Thursday's victory could be considered one of the biggest this program has produced in over five years," Twitchell said. "Waukesha South was the state champion as recently as 2010."
