Coach Mike Steiner's Brookfield East boys track and field team will have plenty of talent returning from last year's defending Greater Metro Conference Indoor and Relay Championship teams.
The Spartans, who finished third in the GMC Outdoor, claimed 14 individual/relay titles during the conference championship meets and broke three GMC records.
East was the WIAA Regional runner-up, and the Spartans took sixth at state. Collin Taylor, who graduated last year, won the high jump title and placed fourth in the triple jump. Dan Osgood was a member of the second place 4x400 relay.
Aaron Thompson, Travis Heil (400) and senior Andrew Amato (1,600) also went to state.
The Spartans' 4x200 relay also qualified for state and all members - Thompson, Ron Langdon, Kevin Reitz and Alex Howland - return.
"With the core of our team returning, we are confident that we have the ability to compete at a high level," Steiner said. "There has been a lot of anticipation among both the athletes and coaches for this season.
"There is no doubt we have some really talented kids returning, so hopefully we can pick up where we left off last season. We have an excellent group of seniors, with some really quality newcomers, and that has only helped add to our depth. I like our team. I think we will be very competitive."
Nine seniors are among the returning lettermen: Osgood, Dan Mossing, Tony Chretien, Kevin Mater, Heil, Reitz, Andy Utic, Mark Lindquist and David Luy.
There are also nine juniors back: Howland, Aaron Dillon, Thompson, Tedrick Boone, Nick Tongas, Kevin Sylla, Langdon, Andy Wanta and George Kotsonis.
Two sophomores to look for are Karl Brandstaetter and Kyle Rohde.
Steiner also said that freshmen Brad Johnson and Trenton Daniels, junior Jon Lehman and seniors Alex Hauer, Chris Solbert, Donavin Tucker and Nick Gibson are people to watch.
Chretien was the Spartans' only winner at Saturday's Nelson-Daniels Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He had a personal-best of 13-feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.
The 4x400 of Thompson, Kotsonis, Reitz and Howland (fourth place), the 4x800 of Brad Johnson, Zach Hodgson, Alex Hauer and Gustav Speder (fifth) and the 4x200 of Langdon, Tucker, Gibson and Lehman (sixth) also did well.
"Without a doubt, Tony's performance was the meet highlight," Steiner said. "Coach Matt Harris has done just a tremendous job with all of our vaulters, but Tony is at another level right now. I am really happy for him. He has worked pretty hard at this."
Steiner added, "Our relays were outstanding and all placed and ran solid early season times."
