Brookfield Central takes care of first-round business

Lancers crush Pulaski, 85-8

March 9, 2010 | 0 comments

Having won their third straight Greater Metro Conference championship March 4, Brookfield Central (17-6) now faces Greendale on Saturday at 4 p.m. at home following an 85-8 trouncing in the regional semifinal victory over Milwaukee Pulaski/Milwaukee Arts on Tuesday.

Brookfield Central coach Dan Wandrey was practical about the easy triumph.

"We earned a second-round game," he said. Central led, 44-3, at halftime.

The Lady Lancers played 15 players Tuesday night and 13 of them scored. Ariel Goodman, a little-used reserve, had an excellent game and led all scorers with 12 points, one of three Central players in double figures. She had two 3-pointers, while Maddy Flynn added three 3-pointers and had 11 points.

Junior forward Valerie Rose Agnello scored all 11 of her points in the first half, including eight in the second quarter.

"You could say that this was a little bit of a preview of next year," Wandrey said.

Central will host a Greendale team led by Mary Merg, a 5-foot-4-inch guard who averages 16.3 points per game. The Panthers were 15-7 overall, having finished tied for second in the Woodland Conference Black Division.

"Merg is a really good guard, Lauren Piotrowski is a pretty good big kid," Wandrey said. "They can score. We'll have our hands full with her."

The Panthers beat Racine Park, 61-36, on Tuesday, their third straight win. Merg led the way with 23 points.

"I think we can play with anyone in the state," Wandrey said. "Some nights we struggle to beat average teams, but I think it will be a competitive game."

Central has won nine of 10 games and three in a row.

Greater Metro Conference finale - The Lady Lancers (17-6) crushed Wauwatosa East, 68-26, last week to finish with a 13-1 record and a share of the GMC title for the third straight season and the fourth in school history.

Divine Savior Holy Angels (16-7) beat Menomonee Falls, 51-24, the same night and as a result won the other half of the title.

Each team split the regular season series, with Central winning, 52-37, on Dec. 11 and DSHA winning the rematch, 41-35, on Jan. 29.

Central is now focusing on making its third straight trip to the WIAA Girls State basketball tournament from March 25-27.

"Many people felt that we should win the GMC once again this year," Wandrey said. "Many people felt it was a forgone conclusion. But to win or share a title three straight years is quite an accomplishment for this group of girls and I'm proud of them."

The Lady Lancers other trip to state came in 2004.

Central's defense took Tosa East out of the game quickly to close out the regular season, jumping out to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and a 31-8 lead at intermission.

Erin Lueder scored 13 points, Agnello added 12 and Maggie Mattiacci and Jesse Thomas chipped in 10 points apiece, as 11 Central players got on the scoreboard.

Central also was clutch from the free-throw line, hitting 15-of-20 for a .750 success rate. Agnello and Thomas each hit four free throws apiece to lead the way.
