Lady Lancers earn third seed in sectional

Central to host Milwaukee Pulaski/Milwaukee Arts on Tuesday

March 1, 2010 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Central girls basketball team earned the third seed in its own sectional, opening up the postseason with a 7 p.m. home game Tuesday against Milwaukee Pulaski/Milwaukee Arts of the City Conference (3-6, 4-13).

The Lady Lancers (12-1, 15-6) will host Wauwatosa East (2-11, 4-17) at 7:30 p.m. today while Divine Savior Holy Angels (12-1, 14-7) travels to Menomonee Falls (3-10, 5-15). If both teams win - the top two teams are facing the bottom two - Central and DSHA will share the Greater Metro Conference Championship.

It would be Central's third in a row and fourth overall (2004).

Central went 1-1 last week, losing a defensive battle to Waukesha South, 32-25, Feb. 23 and then beating Menomonee Falls, 63-36, Friday.

"Jesse Thomas had an unbelievable week," Central coach Dan Wandrey said. "She scored 32 points and did a lot of things right for us."

Against the Waukesha South Blackshirts, the Lady Lancers trailed 13-8 and 17-14 at halftime and couldn't catch up.

"We trailed 30-25 with three minutes left and turned the ball over or couldn't score," Wandrey said. "We shot 12 of 32 overall, but were 0-for-10 from 3-point range."

Thomas led Central with 12 points against Waukesha South.

Thomas got Central off to a fast start against Falls, sparking a 21-8 first-quarter lead and a 32-12 halftime lead.

"She scored 11 points in the first quarter and had 16 of her career-high 20 points at halftime," Wandrey said.

Central continued to roll, building a 53-27 lead into the final period.

Erin Lueder added 10 points for Central. The senior captain moved into third place on the all-time career scoring list with 812 points, slipping past Tara Swartz (811).
