Boys Basketball: Lancers set for postseason matchup with Spartans

Feb. 22, 2010 | 0 comments

The Lancers earned themselves a fifth seed and a first-round tournament game with a familiar foe when they defeated host West Allis Central, 69-63, in a double-overtime Greater Metro Conference game Friday.

Central will host No. 12-seeded Brookfield East (3-10 GMC, 6-14) at 7 p.m. March 2 in the opening game of the WIAA Division 1 tournament. The winner advances to take on No. 4 Whitnall (10-6 Woodland, 13-6) or No. 13 Greenfield (5-11, 6-15) on March 6.

Alex Diciaula led Central with 25 points in the victory over the Bulldogs, which was the Lancers' fifth consecutive triumph. He entered the week as the third-leading scorer in the area with 18.9 points per game. Franklin's Nick Romanowski leads all area scorers at 22.9 and Whitnall's William Pelkofer is next with 22.2.

Central's Alex Olson, who had 14 points and five assists, connected on a 3-pointer in the final minute of the first overtime to erase a three-point deficit and help send the game into the second overtime.

Diciaula scored off an inbounds play to give his team the lead in the second extra frame and the Lancers made eight of 13 free throws to secure the victory.

Nick Olson chipped in with eight points and several key baskets in the second half. Seth Mortag had seven points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Jacob Mahkorn netted four points, had two assists and was a leader on the defensive side of the court.

The victory improved the Lancers to 12-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference, alone in fourth place. They conclude the regular season Thursday with a home game against first-place Menomonee Falls (13-0, 17-3). Falls is seeded second to No. 1 Arrowhead and has a first-round bye in the tournament.
