Brookfield East lost a three-point lead on a four-point play in the final seconds and dropped a 59-58 decision at West Allis Central on Feb. 2 and then was crushed by first-place Menomonee Falls, 65-37, Friday.
With only 31 seconds left to play against the West Allis Central Bulldogs, the Spartans missed two free throws and Central tied the score on a 3-point shot by Anthony Harris, who was fouled on the play. Harris then sank the free throw to give the Bulldogs the lead, and East called timeout with 17 seconds left to play.
"We just couldn't convert the final shot," Brookfield East coach Andy Farley said. "We haven't had a lot of good luck at that place."
After trailing 12-7 in the first period, East took a 20-19 lead into halftime. The team led 36-34 going into the fourth quarter.
Darius Barnes and Colin DeVoe led the way for the Spartans with 16 points each, while C.J. Gregg added nine.
The unbeaten Menomonee Falls Indians (11-0, 14-3) held the Spartans to four points in the first period and seven in the second. The Indians led 39-11 at intermission and 54-24 going into the final quarter.
Barnes was the only East player to reach double figures with 16 points, which was a game-high. Falls' sensational sophomore J.P. Tokoto had 15 to lead the Indians.
