Hockey: Starts finish week by winning 1 of 3

Feb. 1, 2010 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Stars won one of three games last week, earning a 3-0 win over Fond du Lac Springs between losses to Waukesha Catholic Memorial/Pius XI and Waukesha.

Brookfield beat Fond du Lac Springs (11-8) at The Ponds on Friday on two goals by Warren Madsen and one by Tommy Porkka. Garrett Johnson (two), Harrison Aghjian and P.J. Corbett had assists. Goalkeeper Doug Gorand posted the shutout while making 34 saves.

"Gorand had a great game between the pipes, and his play allowed us to control the game," Stars coach Matt Shapiro said. "We played well, but it took us a bit to get rolling. We were 7-for-7 killing penalties which is great, but a better team would have made us pay for those mistakes."

The Stars opened the week with a 5-3 loss to No. 8 ranked Waukesha Catholic Memorial in a Classic 8 Conference matchup Jan. 25 at Eble.

Brookfield goals were scored by Aghjian, Tommy Hastings and Madsen, with assists going to Matt Fosdick (two), Corbett, Hastings, Drew Owen and Zach Pipers.

Tenth-ranked Waukesha then blanked the Stars, 3-0, Saturday at The Ponds. Gorand suffered a knee injury in his shutout against Springs, and Pat Haumschild made 38 saves.
