Senior center Marley Blood had perhaps the best week of her career when she scored 37 points in two games as Brookfield East bounced back from a 44-40 loss at Sussex Hamilton on Jan. 26 and whipped Wauwatosa East, 51-31, Friday.
Senior Marley Blood single-handedly kept the Lady Spartans in the game at Sussex Hamilton, scoring a career-high 23 points.
The Lady Spartans battled the Chargers (4-4, 8-6) for three quarters behind Blood's efforts. She scored eight of East's 10 points in the first period, as Hamilton held a 13-10 lead.
In the second quarter she scored eight of East's nine points as the Lady Spartans outscored the Chargers, 9-7. East went into intermission trailing only 20-19.
Blood continued her scoring by dropping in seven of East's 11 points in the third period. East had an 11-6 advantage in the period to take a 30-26 lead into the final quarter.
But Hamilton held Blood to two points in the final period and went on an 18-10 run to win the game. East held a five-point lead with four minutes left to play, but the Chargers hit four 3-pointers down the stretch for the victory.
Blood finished with nine field goals, and she was five of six from the free-throw line.
"Marley was dominating," East coach Tara Kielblock said. "She really wanted it. She also had 17 rebounds."
Blood and the Lady Spartans then came out Friday at home and quickly blew away Wauwatosa East (1-7, 3-10). Blood continued to work her magic by scoring 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as East jumped out to a 19-8 lead.
"Blood came out to play," Kielblock said. "We talked about not coming out flat, that we needed to start a game off strong. She was hungry for the ball. She showed some strong post moves and finished there. She doesn't always finish her moves like she should."
Then in the second period, Allie Rooney scored six of her 12 points and Laura Burbach scored six of her eight points to spark a 13-3 run and a dominating 32-11 halftime lead.
The Lady Spartans' defense held the Red Raiders to eight, three, 12 and eight points, by quarter.
Everyone got in the game for the Lady Spartans and nine players scored.
"They did what we asked," Kielblock said. "They came out fast. Everyone got in, and it helped their confidence a lot."
East (4-4, 6-8) will now travel to Menomonee Falls for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday.
