Despite a fast start by West Allis Central this season, it will be two familiar teams facing off at 7:30 p.m. Friday for first place in the Greater Metro Conference.
It will be Divine Savior Holy Angels (5-1, 6-6) traveling to Brookfield Central to take on the two-time defending champion Lady Lancers (6-0, 7-4).
West Allis Central (5-2, 8-4) had led the league for a while, before dropping games to the Lady Lancers (33-26) and the Dashers (55-48) last week.
The Lady Lancers won the first matchup (52-37) against Brookfield Central at DSHA on Dec. 11 in the GMC opener. In that game, Central led 15-5 after one period, but the Dashers cut the lead to 22-18 by halftime. Central pulled away after three periods, 39-28, and coasted to victory.
Jesse Thomas scored 18 points and Erin Lueder 16 to lead Central, while Maggie Novak and Sarah Klopp led the young Dashers with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to look back over the last two or three years to see the winner of this game usually comes out as conference champions," Central coach Dan Wandrey said. "But this is game eight, and it is a little premature to give anyone the title this early."
The Lady Lancers are led offensively by Lueder (10.5 points per game), Thomas (8.7), Valerie Rose Agnello (8.2), Maggie Mattiacci (6.2), Kate Sandstrom (2.1), Lindsay Wille (1.8), Maddy Flynn (1.8) and Brooke Duckett (1.3).
The Dashers are led by Brookfield resident Kelly Brandenburg, who leads the team in scoring (11.0), rebounds (8.5), assists and steals. Other key players are Erin Levenhagen (7.5), Maggie Novak (7.2), Christina Kurcz (5.8), Sarah Klopp (3.6) and Elizabeth Linnemanstons (3.6).
"They present a lot of problems," Wandrey said. "(Brandenburg's) a great point guard, one of best in the league. They have a couple of good shooters, a good big player - they are a dangerous team."
DSHA coach Scott Witt has a young team and he played a tough early schedule, but they have won five in a row.
"We are clearly a better team than a .500 team," Witt said. "We've hung tough against good, experienced teams early, but we didn't play well down the stretch.
"We have pride as a good defensive team, but, not returning much experience against great teams early, we couldn't do a lot of defensive things that we now have in."
LAST WEEK'S GAME
Brookfield Central 53
Menomonee Falls 31
The Lady Lancers held the Indians to three points in the first quarter and rolled to the victory. Central scored 21 points in the quarter and then coasted, outscoring Falls by four points in the final three periods, 32-28. Nine players scored for Central, led by Erin Lueder (12 points) and Jesse Thomas (10). Maggie Mattiacci and Kate Sandstrom each had seven points.
