Wrestling: East wins Sheboygan North invite, beats Marquette
Brookfield East earned four second-place finishes and won the nine-team Sheboygan North Invitational on Saturday.
East scored 156.5 points to easily beat Oshkosh West (127) and Shawano (125.5).
"We brought a partial lineup," coach John Veal said. "We expected some of our guys to do well, but they all got hot. Everyone started pinning people, and all went well.
"It was a surprise. We went up there to get the experience. There were a lot of ranked teams there, and we were not highly thought of."
Joey Woppert took second at 145 pounds, winning by pin twice (5:33, 2:43) before losing a decision in the title match (4-3).
Larry Watson was second at 160, winning by technical fall (18-3) and by decision (9-3) before losing by technical fall (19-2).
Tyler Lecher took second at 215, winning by decision twice (11-4, 9-6) before losing in overtime (3-1), and Joe Wahhab was runner-up at 189, winning by pin (2:15) and by decision twice (8-2, 6-5) before losing 5-4 in the title match.
The Spartans' two third-place finishes came from Justin Wolfenden at 125 and Kevin Dentino at 130.
Wolfenden won by pin (1:15) and a major decision (18-4), then lost by a decision (2-1) before winning by a pin (2:49).
Dentino won by a pin (3:11) and a decision (8-1), lost a decision (7-4) and won by a decision (3-1).
East also got third-place finishes from John LeClaire at 135, Casey Dentino at 112 and Andy Wanta at 140.
LeClaire won by a pin (3:11), lost by a technical fall (17-2), won by a pin (2:10) and then earned two decisions (12-7, 7-4).
Casey Dentino won by a pin (1:40), lost a decision (14-7), won by a pin (2:59) and then won two decisions (9-3, 7-4).
Wanta lost a decision (4-2), won a major decision (15-2) and then pinned his final two foes (4:08, 0:49).
The Spartans also wrestled at Marquette on Jan. 21, defeating the Hilltoppers, 39-27, in Greater Metro Conference action.
LeClaire, Wanta and Woppert won by pins; Casey Dentino, Kevin Dentino, Sam Brunker, Wahhab and Lecher won decisions; and Wolfenden won on a technical fall.
East, which met West Allis Hale on Jan. 27, travels to Menomonee Falls tonight as they are back to conference action.
