Pewaukee beats Bulldogs, 7-3, in 11 innings

Brookfield out in first round of LOL playoffs

Aug. 17, 2009 | 0 comments

Pewaukee exploded for four runs in the 11th inning and upset the Brookfield Bulldogs, 7-3, in the first round of the Western Division Land O' Lakes playoffs Aug. 15 at McCoy Field.

With one out in the 11th, the Bulldogs' Alex Tomter hit Kurt Sarcia with a pitch and then brother John Sarcia tripled him home to give the Muskies a 4-3 lead. Tom Zimmerman, Johann Andes, Rob Brockel and Jimmy Marlin (double) then followed with hits and added three more runs.

The game was a pitchers' duel between Brockel and Brookfield's Mark Erickson. Brockel pitched nine innings, allowing five hits, while walking six and striking out 11. Erickson pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, six hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Marlin finished up and earned the win with two shutout innings while Tomter allowed five runs on six hits in four innings.

The Sarcia brothers - batting in the top two spots - reached base eight times to key the Muskies' offense, while the Bulldogs managed only five hits.

The Bulldogs did have some excellent defense on display.

Second baseman Mike Jacobs turned a tough double play in the third inning and then robbed a Muskie of a hit in the seventh by backhanding a ball up the middle and throwing him out at first.

Finally in the eighth, with runners at first and third, a Muskie smashed a ball up the middle, which was deflected by Erickson, saving a hit. Jacobs then fielded the ball and threw out the runner from third attempting to score.

Third baseman Shane Davis made an awesome play in the sixth with two outs, diving to his right into foul territory, backhanding a hard smash and then throwing a bullet to first base to get the inning's final out. He also raced in on a bunt play the next inning and threw out the base runner.

Shortstop Jason Rutz raced out to short center field in the fourth and made a running, over-the-shoulder catch to get the first out of the inning.

The Bulldogs finished with a 12-7 record, while the Muskies (12-8) lost to Oconomowoc, 4-3, in 10 innings Aug. 16 to also see their season come to an end.
