First-round playoff bye on the line

Aug. 4, 2009 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Bulldogs baseball team will host Lannon at 2 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Field with the winner receiving a first-round bye in the Land O Lakes Western Division playoffs.

The Bulldogs (12-5) defeated West Bend, 14-2, as they pounded out 19 hits and three home runs in just 6 1/3 innings in a game shortened because of the 10-run rule.

First-place Oconomowoc (15-2) beat Lannon, 12-7, to set up Saturday's battle. If the Bulldogs defeat Lannon on Saturday, they will finish in second place and earn a first-round bye in the Western Division playoffs. The Stonemen won the first meeting, 7-6.

Shane Davis had a mammoth day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and six RBIs. Davis had a two-run walk-off double to end the game. Four Bulldogs had three-hit games led by Brett Summers, who was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Ernest Castro also was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Kris Franzen was 3-for-4 with a walk and Mike Jacobs finished 3-for-5.

Bill Majeskie was 1-for-2 with a homer, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs, and Scott Booth was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Winning pitcher Greg Basthemer continues his best season in Lakes, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one in six innings of work to pick up the win. Alex Tomter struck out two in an inning of relief.

The Bulldogs have three of the division's top 10 hitters in Jacobs (fifth, .478), Kris Franzen (ninth, .444) and Jason Rutz (10th, .413).

Blue Sox - Brookfield dropped its third straight game Sunday, losing 17-9 to Sussex at Village Park. The Cardinals started the Blue Sox losing streak with a 9-3 win July 25.

The loss dropped the Sox to 4-13, tied for 10th in the Western Division.
