Bulldogs, Blue Sox split weekend series

Teams send players to all-star game

July 7, 2009 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Bulldogs and Blue Sox baseball teams each split a holiday weekend series in the Western Division of the Land O' Lakes.

Bulldogs - The Bulldogs beat Pewaukee, 8-2, at McCoy Field on Saturday, but then lost a 6-3 at Menomonee Falls on Sunday.

The split dropped the Bulldogs (10-2) into third place, a half-game behind first-place Lannon (11-2) and Oconomowoc (11-2).

The Bulldogs committed three errors that led to four first-inning runs in the loss to Falls, and Don August slammed the door on the Brookfield hitters most of the game.

Ernest Castro hit a solo homer, Scott Booth and Eric Sobczak each had two hits, and Booth and Bill Majeskie each had RBI-doubles. Greg Basthemer (5-1) was the tough luck loser, giving up just three earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight and walking two in eight innings of work.

Brandon Reddinger and Booth hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning to spark Saturday's win over Pewaukee. The Bulldogs led 5-2 after five innings before Jason Rutz slammed a three-run homer for the final margin. Rutz finished with four RBIs, and Reddinger added three.

Alex Tomter (1-0) got the win, pitching 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief, allowing four hits and two walks while fanning four.

The Bulldogs have a makeup game Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Brookfield Blue Sox at McCoy Field. They will then have Sunday off for the All-Star Break.

Blue Sox - The Sox won at Monches, 8-7, Saturday, but then lost to Hartland, 8-5, on Sunday at McCoy Field.

Brookfield trailed eighth-place Monches (6-8), 7-3, when the Sox exploded for five runs in the eighth inning on only two hits. The Irish walked four and hit two batters in the inning to help out the rally.

Vince Sottile had three hits, and Ken Poniewaz, Paul Archambault and Jim Pease each had two hits for the Blue Sox. John Arnold allowed two earned runs while pitching a complete game.

The Sox were tied with Hartland 3-3 through six innings Sunday.

But the Oilers scored a run in the seventh and two each in the eight and ninth innings. Brookfield managed to score single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Manager Jeff Lemmermann singled and homered and drove in two runs, Pat Tobiaz singled and doubled, and Jay Wojcinski reached base five times (two singles and three walks) to lead the 10-hit attack.

The Sox are in ninth place (3-8) in the Western Division, but have gone 2-2 in their last four starts.

All-Stars - Five Bulldogs, one Blue Sox and Bulldog manager Jason Booth will take part in the Western Division All-Star game at Trenary Park in Menomonee Falls at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Outfielder Kris Franzen (.571 batting average), third baseman Shane Davis (.463), shortstop Rutz (.461) and designated hitter Castro (.364) were named as starters, and second baseman D.J. Cartledge (.429) made it as a reserve. Third baseman Poniewaz of the Sox also made it as a reserve.
