This is a huge week for Brookfield East baseball coach Tim Granger and the up-and-coming Spartans.
East (13-9), Menomonee Falls (20-3) and Brookfield Central (22-4) were all 8-3 going into this week. The Spartans played Falls on Monday at Trenary Field and then at home Tuesday. The third game is tonight at Brookfield East at 5:30 p.m.
East also had played a makeup game with Muskego (7-4, 12-5) on Wednesday; it was the last South Division game for the Spartans.
"I'm glad to be in the mix, finally," Granger said about the race. "I was always on the outside looking in. Now I'm really going to enjoy this."
Jake Janowski expressed the players' feelings.
"As a senior this is especially exciting," he said. "We absolutely think this is our year right now. We never go out there and say, 'Let's split a series.' We're looking to go out there and win all three."
3-2 in GMC
East won three of five games last week, including two of three GMC games. The Spartans beat Oak Creek, 5-4, in 10 innings June 22, lost at Hamilton, 6-4, June 25 and then rallied to beat the Hamilton Chargers, 5-4, in eight innings Friday in conference play.
Jake Schaffhauser went nine innings in the win over the Oak Creek Knights and Brian Sylla earned the save. The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Hamilton on June 25.
Tongas singled in the tying run. And then Sylla drilled a single to center, driving in Zach Sines with the winning run.
East will travel to Breitlow Field on Monday to face Wauwatosa East, which beat the Spartans in the first meeting, 7-0. East will then host the Red Raiders on Tuesday. Both games are set for 5:30 p.m.
NON-CONFERENCE
June 24 - At Whitefish Bay 8, Spartans 3: The Blue Dukes led 8-0 before East scored three runs in the seventh. Kevin Sylla struck out six in six innings but also walked six. Schaffhauser went 3-for-4 to account for half of the Spartans' six hits.
June 27 - Spartans 12, Pewaukee 5: The game belonged to Janowski, who had three doubles and a single, scored three times and drove in two runs. Freshman Pat O'Brien was brought up from the JV to pitch, and he gave up seven hits, struck out six and did not walk a hitter to earn the win.
