Schaffhauser tosses gem, East beats Falls in extra innings

June 29, 2009 | 0 comments

If Brookfield East's 3-1 win in extra innings at Menomonee Falls tonight is any indication, Spartans and Indians fans should be in for quite a week.

East, Falls and Brookfield Central were tied for first, all with 8-3 records, to start this week. The Spartans improved to 9-3, while Falls dropped to 8-4, as Jake Schaffhauser tossed a complete game gem. He allowed three hits, no earned runs and fanned four and did not walk a batter for the victory.

Falls' Don Matovich scored the game's first run in the third inning on Cole Myhra's ground out as East errors by the rightfielder and second baseman put runners on first and third with one out to start the inning. But Schaffhauser slammed the door, allowing only two hits the rest of the way.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes in the fifth inning and Falls starter Alex Sutherland could not return after the game resumed. With two outs and runners on the corners, catcher Zach Stewart took the ball to right field for a single to score Demetri Tongas with the tying run.

East finally scored two runs in the eighth inning, as the Indians' defense suddenly fall apart with three errors. Jake Janowski singled in Stewart with the lead run and when the ball got by the left fielder, courtesy runner Hobie Holden scored the third run of the game.

Schaffhauser then set the Indians down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth for the victory.

"It was a huge victory," Schaffhauser said afterwards. "We came in here and played true baseball. Now we have the momentum with them (the Indians) coming up two more times this week. But we have a long way to go."

The Indians and Spartans meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at East and again on Thursday.
