Spartans whip Tosa East

Although the Brookfield East boys soccer team split two matches last week, the Spartans came through with a victory in the most important of the two.

The Spartans whipped Wauwatosa East, 4-1, on Aug. 28 at Whitman Field to win their first Greater Metro Conference match and even their record at 1-1. They also improved to 4-2-1 overall.

East scored only 27 seconds into the game as John Orgovan passed to Jonathan Stone, who grabbed the pass and took an immediate shot and it went to the left corner of the net, right past Tosa East goalkeeper Kyle Mabie.

Then at the 21:05 mark, Ryan Toy headed the ball to the back of the net for a goal following a throw to Matt Wilson, who had a high cross to the center of the box.

Each team scored to close out the first half.

The Spartans scored at 33:11 on a well-placed flip throw-in by Wilson to the center of the box that was finished beautifully by Jack Kemnitz.

The Red Raiders then scored their only goal at the 34:05 mark. The ball was dribbled up the side by Ben Carpenter who crossed the ball to just short of the box and Landyn Mills shot to the left of goalkeeper Drew Johnson for the goal.

That was all the scoring until 59:27 when Orgovan finished off the scoring with the final goal of the night.

"We have been working on finishing the ball and are beginning to come around," East coach Herbie Dundun said. "I was very happy the way the team performed, but we still have work to do."

The Spartans lived up to their coach's comments as they tied Kenosha Bradford in regulation on Friday at home, but lost in overtime.

Ben Kosmider executed a well-placed pass to Ryan Toy, who drilled the ball into the right corner of the net only 7:27 into the game.

East led until Kenosha Bradford scored at the 64:26 mark.

The Spartans went into overtime down a couple players due to injuries.

At 88:10, Frankie Velasco went down the left side of the field, dodged two East players and scored the winning goal.

"I assume all responsibility," Dundun said. "I did not prepare the team to play the game.

"The boys gave a good effort, but I just did not have them ready."
