Bulldogs split two games

The Brookfield Bulldogs split two games last weekend and dropped to 6-3 in the Land O' Lakes Western Division, good enough for third place, two games back in the loss column behind West Bend (8-1) and Pewaukee (7-1).

The Bulldogs made seven errors Sunday at McCoy Field and dropped an 8-5 decision to West Bend.

Josh Lemke gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking three in six innings of work.

The Bulldogs trailed 8-2 entering the ninth inning and made things interesting by scoring three runs and having the bases loaded and the winning run up to bat.

But Scott Booth took a high curveball that was called a strike to end the game.

Ryan Hinz led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a walk.

Andy Monigal and Mike Jacobs were both 2-for-4, while Kris Franzen was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Basthemer tosses shutout

Brookfield crushed Oconomowoc, 12-0, as Greg Basthemer tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing seven hits, one walk while fanning two.

The Bulldogs pounded out 17 hits as Hinz went 3-for-3 with a homer, a triple and four RBIs.

Mike Mierow rejoined the team and provided instant punch to the offense, going 2-for-4 with a homer and a double.

Booth and Monigal were both 2-for-4. Jason Rutz was 2-for-3 with a double, a HBP, a walk and an RBI.

Jeff Lueck made his first appearance at the plate since dislocating his left shoulder three weeks ago and ripped a single up the middle batting left-handed.

Franzen ended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning that pushed the score to 12-0.

Brookfield looks to defeat Oconomowoc again when it faces Cooney on the road Sunday.

Blue Sox have tough weekend

It was a terrible weekend for the Brookfield Blue Sox, one it would sooner forget. The Sox lost twice on the road.

Menomonee Falls (6-3) beat them, 11-2, on Saturday at Trenary Field and then Merton (4-4) handed them a 7-2 loss at Firemen's Park on Sunday.

The Sox cut Falls' lead to 3-1 on Bill Posteluk's RBI single.

They then pulled within 3-2 on an RBI double by Jeff Lemmermann in the fifth.

But then losing pitcher John Arnold allowed eight unanswered runs.

The Sox scored twice in the first and that was it against Merton.

Defense let the Sox down, as Merton scored four unearned runs on a pair of infield errors in the fourth. Merton added a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Lemmermann got the loss.

The Sox (4-4) host Falls Sunday at McCoy Field.
