The 'Battle of Brookfield' wasn't much of a battle on Friday night before a packed house at Brookfield East as both the Brookfield Central boys and girls teams rolled to easy victories.
The Lancers won 75-54 as they jumped off to a 24-9 lead in the first quarter as Seth Mortag and Nick Olson scored 10 ad eight points, respectively. BC went on an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach. After an evenly-played second period, Central took at 35-19 lead into intermission.
The Lancers extended their 1-3-1 zone defense against East, picking the Spartans up at half-court.
"We tried to get the ball out of (point guard Ryan) McBride's hands as soon as we could," Central coach Mark Adams said.
"They are big and they are athletic," East coach Andy Farley said. "After hitting some 3-pointers early, we couldn't break it (1-3-1) down."
Nick Kanavas hit two treys and Mike Eberle one to give East a 9-6 lead with 4:09 left in the first period, but then Central when on its 18-0 run.
Central had outstanding balance, as Mortag had 23 points, Matt Lauritzen added 17 (all in the first three quarters), Riley LaChance had 15 points and Olson 14.
Brian Smith had 15 points, nine in the third quarter, Kanavas added 11 and Mikey Novak 10.
Central remains tied for first in the Greater Metro Conference (5-0) with Wauwatosa East (5-0) and they both meet at East next Friday. Brook East is now 3-2, tied for third with West Allis Central.
The Lady Lancers crushed the Lady Spartans, 60-24, using a 19-0 second quarter to coast to the victory.
Coach Dan Wandrey cleared in his bench in the first half, as Central led 41-10 at halftime, but held only a 19-14 edge in the second half.
Sophomore point guard Lydia Rohde scored 11 points in the 22-10 first period and out-scored East by herself. She finished with a game-high 17 points and Anna Liewen added 14, including eight in the second quarter.
Emily Utic led East with seven points.
The Lady Lancers are now tied for fourth (2-2) in the GMC, while East stayed in last place with an 0-4 record.
