Brookfield Central took advantage of Oak Creek turnovers and defeated the Knights, 21-14, Friday night at home in a downpour.
With the score tied at 14-14, Lancers senior running back Connor McCullough scored the winning touchdown with 4 minutes, 49 seconds left to play on a 3-yard run.
Central had taken over at the 49-yard line with 8:20 left to play. Behind an offensive line led by Marcus Aprahamian, Rocky Johnson Bobby Mussa, Nick Hubbard, John Price and Sam Rohr, McCullough had big runs in the final touchdown drive, including plays of 11, 22 and 10 yards.
Central got down to the six-yard line, but after the Knights defense stopped McCullough twice, they jumped off sides and moved the Lancers down to the 3-yard line where McCullough powered in for the score.
It was McCullough's third touchdown of the day as he rushed for 220 yards on 31 carries, an average of 7.1 yards per carry.
McCullough scored his first touchdown with 3:14 gone in the first quarter following an Oak Creek fumble. Oak Creek's outstanding quarterback Kyle Veloz tied the game when he hit Nick Stokes with a beautiful 30-yard pass right up the middle of the field to tie the game at 7-7 at the 7:12 mark in the second quarter.
McCulloough scored again right before half at 2:53 and Central led 14-7 at intermission.
Most of the third quarter was scoreless as the sky opened up and the rain came down. Central had a drive going as McCullough had runs of 15, 19 an 13 yards, but Oak Creek defensive back Thomas Overland intercepted a pass on the 5-yard line to stop a Lancer threat.
Oak Creek then took the ball down the field and tied the game at 14-14 when junior running back Lincoln Wylie scored on a 16-yard run right up the middle with 2:55 left in the quarter.
After Central took a 21-14 lead, Veloz led the Knights down the field, but Central defensive back Jack Lawton intercepted a pass in the end zone to end Oak Creek's final threat with less than two minutes left to play.
