Veteran Brookfield Central tennis coach Dave Steinbach received the 2010 USTA Starfish Award on Monday at the U.S. Open in White Plains, N.Y., but the dinner he attended Saturday evening gave him even more personal satisfaction.
Steinbach and his wife, Patsy, who have been married 50 years, had dinner Saturday night with his son Mark and daughter Dawn, their respective spouses, Tracy Steinbach and Craig Caliendo, and their six grandchildren - Craig, Danny, Marina, Adam, Austin and Sydney.
"All our children, their spouses and our grandchildren wrote their own toast," Steinbach said. "About what my wife and I meant to them.
"It was very touching. We are an extremely close, loving family. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow up."
Steinbach, along with Bill Wagstaff from Mead High School in Spokane, Wash., received the national award, which recognizes high school coaches who implement a 'no-cut' policy for their tennis teams.
"I accept the award on behalf of the players, coaches and parents of all the Brookfield Central tennis teams, past and present," Steinbach said. "Coaching has always been a part of my life and giving everyone the opportunity to play has always been a priority for me."
