Central runners shine in Falls invitational

Lancers have 13 top 10 performers

Sept. 1, 2010 | 0 comments

The Brookfield Central boys and girls cross country teams took part in the Menomonee Falls Grade Level Invitational on Aug. 26 at Rotary Park.

The race is different, as it is more of a warm-up for the regular season. Thus, the results are divided into classes.

The Lancers boys team had two top 10 finishes among their senior boys, three among their junior boys, one among the sophomores and one among the freshmen, giving them seven runners placing in the top 10.

"I thought it was about as good of a first day as we could have hoped for," Central boys coach Ronn Blaha said. "Everyone was excited to get the season started, and there was a bit of nervousness coming from last year (defending state champs) and knowing that there were expectations on this year."

For the seniors Sam Poser finished third in 16 minutes, 27.86 seconds and Robbie Greco was seventh (17:23.88). For the juniors, Nick Petersson was second (16:50.28), Wesley Vann, fourth (17:22.19) and Gabe Poser, sixth (17:36.59).

Although Carl Hirsch was the only sophomore in the top 10, he won the race in 16:32.09. For the freshmen, Kevin Rindfleisch made it into the top 10 by finishing 10th (20:08.69).

"Carl ran a great race," Blaha said. "He contained himself at the start and didn't take the lead until the 1200-meter mark. Then, he just kept pushing. He had to hold off a challenge at the end. It was a huge race for him."

Blaha summed up his feelings of getting the first race out of the way.

"I think they showed what they are capable of," he said. "They don't score the meet as a team, but looking at our times and how we competed, I think we are in really good shape for this early in the season.

"This should help everyone relax a bit and remember to have fun. They should take some confidence away from this meet."

Girls season looks promising

The Lady Lancers had four seniors in the top 10 and one each for the sophomores and freshman, a total of six top 10 performers.

"The team ran exceptional times for the start of the season," girls coach Lorie Lewis said. "This is a credit to the summer running so many of the girls did. They worked very hard to improve and it has paid off for them."

Margaret Flatley finished second (14:47.51), Hannah Trasser, third (14:52.70), Maddie Fischer, seventh (16:41.79) and Elizabeth Stief, ninth (17:08.70) were Central's top-10 seniors.

Sophomore Veronica Porubsky finished eighth (17:17.61) and freshman Elizabeth Flatley won her race (15:06.70).

"The Flatley sisters - Margaret and Elizabeth are outstanding runners who provide a significant competitive improvement to the team," Lewis said. "Unfortunately, at this point, our lead runner - Margaret Flatley will be out for at least three weeks due to a bruised bone."

Lewis was also pleased with Fischer and Trasser.

"On a positive note, senior Maddie Fischer raced a career PR of 40 seconds to start the season," she said. "I am very proud of her improvement from all her training over the summer. This will move her up from the JV team to a top five runner on varsity.

"Hannah Trasser is in excellent condition and will be a front runner for us all season. The team looks forward to a very competitive season."
