All you have to do to understand why Pete Wysocki enjoys what he does is look at the bulletin boards in his office.
Wysocki, who in his 35th year as a student supervisor at Brookfield Central, has photos, newspaper clippings and correspondence from his student-athletes past and present.
"You are going to be working two, three months with the students," Wysocki said. "No. 2, it's nice that they are great athletes - you are not going to win championships if you don't have great athletes.
"But No. 1 you have to have people who are really fun to work with. They want to be there. They want to work. They want to listen to you. It makes things so much more pleasant."
Wysocki, who is in his 36th year of coaching track, helps coach the long jump for the Lancers girls team. So it is no surprise that two of his favorite student-athletes are Katelyn Malcore and long jump state-champion Chidera Obasih.
Wysocki praised both students, not only as athletes, but most importantly, as people.
"Katelyn Malcore's just an outstanding person. At state track she was hurting, but she had a lot of conviction, competing in the 300 hurdles. She did it for the team.
"I enjoy very much working with Chidera because she is such an outstanding person. I got her name on my license plate (Dera LJ)."
In the fall, Wysocki's big job is filming the football games. When Wysocki started shooting the games in the mid-1970s, he worked with film. When the game was over he had to take the film downtown to get it developed. He would wait around for an hour and then drop the processed film off at a coach's home at 2 a.m.
"Then we started using these huge cameras that you had to put on your shoulders, along with these giant VCRs that we had to use," he said. "Now everything is just in the palm of your hands. It's just unbelievable how things have developed."
New head football coach Jamie Meulemans praises Wysocki as a person and a worker.
"He truly cares about the kids here, about the athletic programs," Meulemans said. "He's an outstanding individual person, and we are very lucky to have him."
