It was a good stretch for the Brookfield East soccer team until the final match of the week.
The Spartans opened the week by beating Sussex Hamilton, 5-0, at home in the Greater Metro Conference opener and then started the Al Gusho Tournament with wins over Cedarburg (6-0) on Friday and Arrowhead (3-1) on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, Marquette handed them a 4-1 loss in the championship match Saturday in a game that brought together what could be the top two teams in the state.
Sussex Hamilton
East continued its winning ways Aug. 26 with the 5-0 victory over Sussex Hamilton. It was a total team effort as four Spartans found the net.
Evan Griffin opened the scoring for East at 20 minutes, 48 seconds into the first half off an assist by Chris Haeberle. Peter Horner finished the first-half scoring at 35:44 with an assist by Griffin as the Spartans enjoyed the majority of play, outshooting the Chargers in the first half, 15-4.
The Spartans involved and received contributions from every player on the field as they held the advantage in ball possession throughout the half.
They continued to hold the majority of play in the second half, again outshooting their opponent by a 19-7 margin. Horner opened the scoring at 41:12 off a free kick from just outside the penalty area. Mark Heydt scored next, off a corner kick taken by Connor Hansen at 45:01. Then he assisted Andy Raymonds at 45:15 for the final goal of the match.
For the match, East won seven corner kicks to three for Hamilton, and tallied four saves (three by Matthew Flanagan, one by Ben Kosmider) to nine for the Chargers.
Gusho Tournament
Team effort was again the buzzword Friday afternoon in a 6-0 victory over Cedarburg in the opening match of the Gusho Tournament.
Chris Haeberle, assisted by Peter Tongas, notched the first of three first-half goals at the 9:06 mark. Haeberle, assisted by Horner, struck again at 15:57, and Raymonds, assisted by Griffin, scored at 17:02.
The Spartans took seven shots in the half while the Bulldogs took four.
Horner found the net at 47:54 with an assist from Josh Breider for the first goal of the second half. Griffin followed at 54:54, assisted by Horner, and Max Karcher closed out the scoring at 61:41 with an assist from Heydt. The Spartans tallied eight shots in the half to Cedarburg's four; corner kicks were even at three each for the match.
Saturday morning the Spartans beat Arrowhead, 3-1, to earn a spot in the title match against Marquette. Horner scored on a free kick, Raymonds scored an unassisted goal and Haeberle scored with an assist from Horner.
The Hilltoppers (5-0) scored first when Dorian O'Lochlayne kicked in a rebound shot for a 1-0 lead only 1:54 into the match. The Spartans bounced back at 11:02 when Raymonds had a nice pass to Horner for the score.
But that was it for the East offense, as the Hilltoppers shut them down the rest of the way.
But the Marquette offense continued to roll, as Alex Megna took a corner kick from O'Lochlayne and scored at 19:50 for a 2-1 halftime lead.
O'Lochlayne continued to give East headaches, as he made it 3-1 with a score off a pass from Pat Hodan at 43:32. Then Joe Naughton added the final goal off an assist from Erik Carillo at 67:19.
The Hilltoppers outshot East, 15-7, as Flanagan had six saves for the Spartans.
