Brookfield East girls volleyball coach Chris Polowy had a goal for this weekend and his Spartans didn't disappoint him.
East finished fifth out of 27 teams at the Milton Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday, and that was exactly what Polowy was looking for.
"Our goal going into this 27-team tournament was to finish in the top five, and we were able to do just that," Polowy said. "The girls fought hard to make this goal a reality by handling a very good Catholic Central team in the fifth-place match, which avenged a loss that we took from them on Friday."
The Spartans swept Burlington Catholic Central (25-20, 25-8) to finish 8-3 in the tournament.
Individual stats for the tournament looked like this: Christine Walrath, 56 kills; Danielle Walkowiak, 15 aces and 147 assists; Kimberly Boritzke, 61 digs; Jessica Walkowiak, 60 digs; and Julie Armstrong, 12 blocks.
The Spartans beat Gladstone, Mich., (25-7, 25-17), Waterford (25-21, 25-22), Madison LaFolette (25-18, 25-19), Parkview (25-16, 25-22) and Kenosha Bradford (25-20, 25-22), while losing to Catholic Central (20-25, 20-25) in day one pool play Friday.
Saturday, in the day two Gold Division pool, they went 3-2.
The Spartans lost to Lakeside Lutheran (16-25, 20-25) and Tomahawk (14-25, 20-25) and beat Madison LaFolette (25-20, 25-12), Waterford (25-23, 25-19) and Catholic Central.
"Another highlight of the weekend was our two-match sweep of a tough Madison LaFolette team," Polowy said. "The two-day, 11-match tournament was just what we needed heading into conference play."
Polowy then talked about what he and his wife and co-coach, Emily, learned about the squad over the weekend.
"We learned a lot about our players, and the girls were able to learn a lot about each other on the court," he said. "Our junior outside hitter, Christine Walrath, made the nine-player All-Tournament team, leading the way with 56 kills for the tournament.
"Our setter/libero sisters, Danie and Jessica Walkowiak, also had a great tournament."
