Elmbrook swimmers perform well at state, nationals

Aug. 29, 2010 | 0 comments

Thirty-seven swimmers represented fourth-place Elmbrook in the four-day state championship from July 29 to Aug. 1 at the Pleasant Prairie RecPlex in Kenosha.

Leading the scoring were the 13-14 boys and the 15-16 girls, who also won second place in the age group high points.

The team had two state champions: Kelly Theis, who won the 17-and-over women's 800-meter freestyle and Kelsey Hojan-Clark, who won the 200 backstroke and the 400 individual medley.

The 2010 Conoco Phillips United States Senior and Junior National Championships were held at Irvine, Calif., the weeks of Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, respectively.

Hojan-Clark attended both meets, competing in the 400 IM and the 200 backstroke at the Senior Nationals and the 200 back, and 200, 400 and 1,500 freestyles at the Junior Championship.

Hojan-Clark was joined by first-time national attendee Jack Donovan and Kayla Dlugopolski for the Junior Championship.

Donovan swam the 100 fly and a time trial in the 200 fly and 50 free. Dlugopolski swam the 800 free, 400 free and the 1,500 free. All swims were lifetime bests.

Despite the fast swims, Elmbrook waited until the final day to heat things up notably in the mile.

Dlugopolski started with an amazing 1,500 (17 minutes, 13.53 seconds). About one hour later, Hojan-Clark took off to break her own club record in the 400 freestyle and set a personal best 800 free.

She finished fourth with 16:46.53 in the 1,500, breaking the Wisconsin state record (1:17.20).
