Boys Soccer: Lancers blank Tosa East in GMC opener

Aug. 29, 2010 | 0 comments

Coach Jon Mroz saw his Brookfield Central team open the Greater Metro Conference season with a 2-0 win over Wauwatosa East on Aug. 24 at home.

"For the first time in four years we played Tosa East without significant weather interference," Mroz said.

Dark skies threatened the start of this year's match; clear skies later led the way to a Lancers' victory.

Wauwatosa East had a chance to get on the board first, as a first-half free kick dipped over the wall by Spencer Orin required a spectacular diving save by Central goalkeeper Tim Garvey, who was named the Man of the Match. Shortly after that, Orin put another shot from outside the box onto the crossbar.

But it was all Central after that. The Lancers took the lead when Amir Alwan flicked an Anthony Scaffidi serve onto the path of Danny Wheaton. Wheaton volleyed the ball with his right foot past an outstretched Kyle Mabie in the Tosa East goal and gave Central a 1-0 lead going into intermission.

After the goal, Central began to settle down and control the play. Scoring chances became more frequent for the Lancers, but it was not until the 64th minute that they doubled their lead when the speed of Nick Cianciolo put himself through the Raiders' defense.

His shot was neatly tucked inside the far post and the Lancers cruised the rest of the way, limiting Tosa East to only one second-half shot.

Central outshot the Red Raiders, 14-5, as Garvey had two saves and Mabie had nine for the Red Raiders.
