Brookfield East boys volleyball coach Tim Owen is looking forward to working with a veteran team this year.
"We should be a more experienced team than a year ago as we only graduated two seniors (Alec Balge and Ben Fronberry)," Owen said. "We'll count on leadership from six seniors, as many of those returning saw substantial times a year ago."
The Spartans have seven returning letter winners, including six seniors: John Foley, Cal Hilkert, T. Ryan Hicks, Andrew Hrobar, Quinn Lyster and Kevin Schmitt.
Their most talented player is junior Kyle Rohde, a second-team All-Greater Metro Conference selection, who received honorable mention all-state honors.
Brookfield East finished with a 3-6 conference record and a 7-9 overall mark, losing to Shorewood in the regional.
Owen also has four newcomers to blend into his rotation in juniors Alex Bartelme, Adam LaGrassa and Bryan Sternig and sophomore Karlis Abuls.
But East also will have to work on its attitude.
"In order to reach our full potential we will have to develop an attitude of being a scrappy team," Owen said. "The team is made up of a bunch of guys who are willing to work hard. How much we improve throughout the year will determine how far we are able to go this year."
