Talented cross country returnees ready to defend conference title

Spartans girls coach feeling confident about season ahead

Aug. 23, 2010 | 0 comments

The Brookfield East girls cross country has eight returning letter winners champing at the bit to defend the Greater Metro Conference championship.

Leading the returnees are first-team all-conference seniors Natalie Dillon and Taylor Conway, second-team selections Madeline Timm and Taylor Stewart, and third-team performer Kathleen Browne.

Senior Katie Tolan, junior Taylor Swittel and sophomore Brittany Allen are the other returning letter winners; senior Kathy Luy, who contributed to the varsity her freshman and sophomore years, returns after taking a year off.

Coach Kim Leupold also looks for newcomers Brianna Mathison, a freshman, and Shannon Cashin, a sophomore, to make an impact.

"Both girls are showing strong running performances in the first weeks of being in-season," she said. They are running up with the top pack and showing commitment to being a top runner.

"Also looking very strong on the season and running with more experience and closer to the top pack are sophomores Natalie Gehred and Maria Gehred and junior Elise Linsmeier."

With all this talent, Leupold is excited about the upcoming season.

"We are a very tight group, like a family," she said. "Coach Lisa Foss and I are starting our fourth year coaching together, and we have been blessed to watch this year's senior class come in as freshmen, mature, contribute at the varsity level and give us all they've got year after year.

"As coaches, we are working at a few changes with our training program this season to reach our full potential as a team both at the JV and varsity level. Coming in ready for the season, the team looks experienced, and I believe we will be a top contender in the conference again."
