Chicago may be a nice place to visit, but a local businessman doesn't believe his neighbors should have to make a special trip south every time they need to add a new item to their wardrobe. So earlier this year, David Matsudaira did his part to save Wisconsin residents time and money when he opened Squire Fine Men's Apparel.

"We're here to serve the community with fine, classic, traditional and updated clothing, so that customers don't have to travel to Nordstrom in Chicago to fulfill their apparel needs," said Matsudaira, president and CEO of the Brookfield-based store. "Squire has items for every budget, from high-end prices to less-than-high end."

The process of filling the clothing void began last year, shortly after Matsudaira became president of Suiters, the men's store formerly located at Squire's current location in the Brookfield Towne Centre.

"Suiters had been experiencing a lull in business in previous years, but was doing very well at the end of 2010 and into 2011 when its owner decided to pursue other interests," he said. "Suiters closed in March, and I saw a great opportunity to brand Squire as a different and better Suiters, so we re-opened in June with the same personnel."

Matsudaira's upgrades included opening the store to natural light, adjusting Squire's prices to reflect the current economic climate and adding new lines that complement such existing clothing brands as Hart Schaffner Marx, Robert Talbott and Jack Victor. He said consumer response to the store has been positive.

Squire's inventory includes a variety of formalwear, professional attire and business casual/sportswear, as well as outerwear and accessories.
