Elmbrook to reconsider 4K program for 2014-15
Elmbrook School District Superintendent Mark Hansen told the School Board on Tuesday that the district will propose a comprehensive recommendation to implement a K4 program to the board in the fall of 2013 for implementation the following school year.
Hansen said the decision to rekindle a long-standing discussion that has been the subject of board review over several years is because "it is the right thing to do" in order to complete the district's offerings. He noted that a K4 program would fit into the district's goals of improving literacy and learning, though there was no vote, board reaction was mixed.
Bob Ziegler, a longtime K4 proponent who will be ending his board service in April, said he favored discussing the topic in January. Richard Brunner also favored an earlier discussion, citing a city of Brookfield survey that indicated residents placed a high priority on the strength of local public schools.
Other board members were not supportive of an earlier discussion, but were willing to see Hansen's plan.
The most pointed opposition came from Kathryn Wilson, who said the issue was has been so polarizing that she did not favor discussion in the short term, including next year.
Elmbrook School District going paperless
The School Board on Tuesday unanimously voted to approve an expenditure of no more than $17,000 to drive the implementation of a paperless board strategy by February, 2013.
Board member Glen Allgaier, chair of the Communications Committee, recommended the initiative based on the district purchasing and issuing laptops to the board, buying and installing a subscription of a software program and training the users.
The recommendation stated that the change would "promote efficiency and effectiveness in the collection, publishing and distribution of board and committee content."
Preliminary cost analysis indicated that savings per meeting would be in the thousands of dollars for paper, copying and labor.
Paperless board communications systems have been adopted by other districts including Kettle Moraine, LaCrosse and West Bend.
