Redistricting bumps Waukesha County supervisor out of his own district
Supervisor runs to represent new area
When Waukesha County went through the redistricting process, it apparently didn't take into account that County Supervisor Tom Schellinger would want his district to include his home.
Of course, the county doesn't use those kind of requirements to determine district boundaries, they use a conglomeration of population statistics to set up voting blocks. That knowledge didn't leave Schellinger any less disappointed about the fact that he'll no longer be representing District 8.
"The district that I represented has been a district on the Waukesha board for 50 years," Schellinger, who grew up in Elm Grove, said.
"What made this particularly special for me was I grew up in Elm Grove, and for the last 27 years I've lived in the city of Brookfield, so it's kind of special with all of the childhood memories and representing that area."
Schellinger's Brookfield home doesn't sit in the newly configured District 8, and he'll have to run in District 20 to remain eligible for a supervisor position.
When determining districts, there is a certain protocol the Executive Committee should have followed. Schellinger said much of that protocol, which includes being mindful of citizen input and historical continuity, was ignored.
"The Executive Committee, in my opinion had no feedback at all as far as trying to accommodate old districts," he said.
"I was disappointed because I have a real passion for the area I represent."
Schellinger will still run for county supervisor in April, only now he will be representing Southeast Brookfield and part of New Berlin instead of Elm Grove and the portion of Brookfield he has been representing.
He will be unopposed in his race.
Patty Haukohl will be running unopposed for District 8, which will include all of Elm Grove.
