Vacant Pepino's building likely new home of Tomter's Inn in Brookfield

Pub fare would be offered, building remodeled

Feb. 22, 2012 | 17 comments

After being vacant for a little more than a year, the former Pepino's Pizza building on Capitol Drive will soon have a new life as Tomter's Inn, a new pub-style eatery.

David Tomter, owner of the Butler Inn, purchased the building at 17065 W. Capitol Drive. He named the new establishment after his first bar, which was located in Milwaukee. The original Tomter's Inn closed in 1994 after 17 years of business.

"I've always liked the Pepino's building; I've always liked the location," Tomter said. "When the opportunity came up, I decided I wanted to use my last name and revive that again."

He intends to remodel the space, and hopes to present plans to the city of Brookfield within the week.

Plans include pulling out the existing bar and replacing it with a larger bar that will run east to west. He also will make minor changes to make the space feel more open, Tomter said. If all goes well, he hopes to open in May.

"I like to do the glorified pub, that's the direction I'm going," he said. "We'll turn it into a wonderful pub on Capitol Drive."

He said the new establishment will be a little different than the original Tomter's Inn because there will be more food options available. He plans to serve the same menu as the Butler Inn, which includes pub fare such as appetizers, sandwiches, pizza and a fish fry - with a few tweaks.

"As time goes on I'm always looking to add things and make changes," he said. "Right now I want to get my doors open."

As part of his plans, Tomter has indicated to the city that he would like to split the lot and sell the corner land for the development of office space, which is consistent with the city's neighborhood plans, said Tim Casey, economic development coordinator.

"It's good to see a business come into that part of town, but it's also good to see an office building on the corner," Casey said.

The city of Brookfield sees the move as a step in the right direction.

"We would like to see fewer vacancies and more successful businesses, so we are pleased to see a business move into the Pepino's Pizza building," Mayor Steven Ponto said. "It's another sign that things are gradually improving. We want to see the vacancy rates get down."

To fill those vacancies, the city is working to try to attract more businesses. One of the things being done is addressing concerns over the restrictiveness in the sign code. The city is looking to see how the code can be adjusted so that a high level of standard still remains, while allowing the flexibility needed for commercial establishments, Ponto said.

  1. Dave,
Glad to read that you'll be taking over and reopening the place. I used to shoot pool leagues at your old "Inn" on Appleton and Burleigh, which brought us back several times for the good food and drinks. Since the Butler Inn has a good reputation as well, it'll be great to visit your new establishment when you open.

Plus, it's right around the corner from my home.
  2. Fantastic news. We can use another eatery in the neighborhood. Tomter's will do well given all the customers that have been driven away from Pistol Pete's.

  3. Tomters Rocks!
  4. The wait staff is nice but Pistol Pete's has the absolute rudest owner I've ever experiences in any business that interfaces with the public. He has the most horrible reputation for customer satisfaction. He really seems to think that the he's doing you a favor by taking your money.

I live very close to Pistol's and I've been there several times. I agree that the pizza is outstanding but the rest of the menu is uneven.

Between family and friends I could relay a dozen incidents but I'll just share the last one. I finally swore the place off after they charged me for condiments that I didn't request (dipping sauce for garlic bread) and refused to take the charge off my bill. That same meal I ordered the small pizza which included 3 toppings for a set price. I ordered 3 toppings and they insisted on charging me for an extra topping. Both items amounted to a trivial sum of money but I couldn't believe that they'd pull that kind of thing.

This was the last of several incidents involving a 'my way or the highway' customer service attitude.

There are too many good eating alternatives around to spend any more money with him.

    • Good Customers and Bad customers, you sound like a bad customer. You get back what you give out. They are most likely glad to see you gone. Who needs a complainer. Waitress write down what they are told. Done deal.
    • Dad of boys, the only thing you said that didn’t make yourself look totally clueless was your comment about the outstanding pizza at Pistol Pete's!
In regards to the 3 topping pizza special, three means three, why would you think a fourth topping would be free? That would be as asinine as going to a gas station buying three gallons of gas and then expecting a fourth free gallon of gas.
In regards to the "dipping sauce", providing that it was not used (because why use it if you didn’t request it) A rational explanation to a manager or even the owner him/herself will usually result in an item being removed from ones bill in most instances at any establishment.

Hay, this place cant be all that bad if you kept going back after a dozen incidents! In fact I think I will go there this weekend for pizza and stay for the live entertainment. Thanks!
    • aroundtown,
By all means give it a go. I'm certain you'll eventually reach the same conclusion I had. My only interest in posting my experience was to help others avoid a bad outcome like I had. I can only warn you, I can't decide where you eat. :-)

      A couple of short comments....
      - The point of the pizza anecdote was that it only had three toppings and they wanted to charge me extra even though the menu said it included three.
      - I did complain and ask that the charge for the unused sauce be removed from the bill and they refused.
  5. Butler Inn has a good reputation but the emphasis on a bar at the old Pepino's site, which is directly across from another bar, should keep the Brookfield Police on their toes.
  6. Why use this article to blow off steam about Pistol Pete's? Some folks just have to find something to complain about! I hope the menu and prices are comparable to Butler Inn. If they are, they've got me for a customer.
  7. Lay off of Pistol Pete's for God's sake. It's a great place and a best kept secret for food. Everything that I've had on that menu was excellent!
  8. Talk about owners, our company used to spend a fortune at the Butler Inn because of a particular customer of ours who liked it. And day after day, week after week, Tomter NEVER so much as acknowledged our existence. Needless to say, when that customer moved away, we moved away...............from the Butler Inn. BTW, we really like Pete's!
  9. Sorry I missed this. Sounds like snhitmeog I would be interested in. Maybe you will be having another event in the future. maybe closer. I was ripped off by a course of this type. Spent over $4000 and still have not made any money. Maybe this course would be better. Reply to this Comment
