The pre-kindergarten students celebrated an early Thanksgiving with family and friends Nov. 22, singing songs, reciting poems and sharing their recipes for cooking the Thanksgiving turkey. Students prepared a "feast" of snacks to share. In other news, the eighth-grade class traveled to Madison to tour the Capitol and the Veterans Museum. They were given a tour by Steve Baas, the director of political affairs for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Association of Commerce, and met with State Rep. Dale Kooyenga.
A list of first-semester honor roll students has been posted to the school's website, which can be accessed from the district site, www.ElmbrookSchools.org.
Tuesday marks the premiere of the Bobcat Broadcast, a live video broadcast of daily school announcements to all of the classrooms at the start of the school day. Fifth-grade students, with the help of staff coordinators, write the script; learn to use an iMac, cameras and video equipment; and gain public speaking confidence as they provide useful news to the Brookfield Elementary community.
The Skylight Opera Company will present "The Standard Songbook" to the second-grade students on Friday. FAB (Fine Arts at Burleigh) is sponsoring this interactive and entertaining show, which introduces students to music and concepts through song and stories. This offering integrates the fine arts into the Elmbrook second-grade writing curriculum and standards.
The eighth-grade class will be hosting its annual movie night Friday. They will be showing a double feature, "Madagascar" and "Madagascar 2." Parents are encouraged to drop off their children from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and then go do some Christmas shopping.
Pilgrim Park Middle School
The Pilgrim Park Middle School Ski and Snowboarding Club will have its first outing on Dec. 5. The club, open to everyone from beginners to experts, plans four outings each year. Participants receive instruction from certified ski professionals and then have time to refine their skills on the hills. Nearly 150 students participate.
School families filled 135 boxes for the Operation Christmas Child project and donated $986 for postage for the boxes. The school sent enough postage to cover all of its boxes, as well as a $100 donation to Samaritan's Purse. The packages will go to India and Zambia this year. Since the program began in 2001, St. Dominic School has collected a total of 2,215 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.
St. John Vianney
Four-year-old kindergarten has themes that are focused on the season, including topics such as trees, leaves, owls, Native Americans and pilgrims. Their room is a little mini-Plymouth, Mass., as they incorporate dramatic play and hands-on activities into the books they read and songs they sing. They are also doing math using pine cones, horse chestnuts and beads.
The fourth-grade continues its study of Wisconsin. They have been focusing on the effects of glaciers and the formation of the state's five landform regions. In writing, fourth-graders are working hard to develop complete, detailed paragraphs that can be incorporated into all their writing samples as well as their personal narratives. In math, students are discovering the uses and computation of decimals.
The second-graders, along with their fourth-grade buddy classes, are collecting travel size and sample toiletries for a local shelter.
